Aaron Rodgers guides the Packers to victory in Super Bowl XLV
Green Bay’s quarterback threw for 304 yards and 3 touchdowns to help the Packers win their fourth Vince Lombardi Trophy in franchise history.
When the Green Bay Packers arrived to Arlington, Texas they received a clear message from their head coach Mike McCarthy reminding them that they where going to stay true to their style, where “the preparation is the prize”. That phrase pretty much summarizes why the Packers won Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers by 31-25. The sixth and bottom seed in the NFC stepped into the Cowboys Stadium prepared to demolish Pittsburgh’s defensive unit that for other contenders had been lethal, but not for them.
Guided by their quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who bought along his entire arsenal to the battlefield, the Packers began to build their victory since the first quarter, which they closed with a 14-0 lead. The first wound in the Steelers defensive unit was caused by a 29 yard pass from Rodgers that Jordy Nelson connected with 3:44 minutes to go, giving the chance to Mason Crosby to score the extra point. The second wound didn’t take too long to happen, as 24 seconds later Nick Collins was going to intercept a pass from Ben Roethlisberger and take the football all the way to the touchdown zone. Collins didn’t miss the kick and the Packers began to see the first fissures on the wall of steel.
Pittsburgh opened their box score with a 33 yard field goal from Shaun Suisham in the first minutes of the second quarter, which was the Steelers first sign of reaction. But the Packers knew that their rival was still feeling the effects of their attacks, and that they needed to take advantage of the situation by wounding them again. Another touchdown pass came out of Rodgers’ right hand, and Greg Jennings connected the 21 yard pass right on target, and Crosby added the extra point.
With a 3-21 in the box score the Steelers knew that their situations was critical and that they couldn’t afford to be wounded again, as the result was going to be catastrophic. Big Ben knew that there was still time to make up for the interception suffered in the first quarter, and with 39 seconds to go in the second quarter he threw an 8 yard pass to Hines Ward to reduce the distance to 11 points, after Suisham made the extra point good.
After halftime the Steelers had understood that attacking was not only a good defense, but also their only choice. An 8 yard run from Rashard Mendenhall and Suisham’s kick gave Pittsburgh reasons to believe that the come from behind win was possible, as there where still 10:19 minutes to go in the third quarter and 15 more minutes still to go in the final quarter, and the 11 point difference had been reduced to 4.
Far from feeling the pressure from their rival’s proximity, the Packers continued to be true to their style and the duo Rodgers-Jennings connected another touchdown pass. Crosby got the kick and they recovered the 11 point lead early in the fourth quarter. By then the wall of steel was already falling into pieces, although Big Ben renewed his team’s hopes with a 25 yard pass to Mike Wallace for the touchdown. In the following play Antwaan Randle kept the hopes alive with a 2 point conversion that put things 25-28 with 7:37 minutes left before the end. His demands were not well taken by the club’s owner, Italian Massimo Moratti, who found no remorse in firing the Spaniard, as he couldn’t understand how a team that had just won an epic treble -Coppa Italia, Serie A and UEFA Champions League- could be having such a poor performance and attributing the bad results to lack of new signings.
Despite only being in charge for six months, Benitez didn’t leave with empty hands, as Inter won the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup under his orders. But that wasn’t enough to eclipse the bad performance in the Serie A, where the team was in the sixth position, 13 points under the leader and city rival Milan.
Under those circumstances Leonardo took charge of the team, and his orders had an immediate effect in a roster that quickly understood that they needed a change of attitude for results to follow. That change took place and Inter began to see the fruits of their work reflected in the standings. After just eight match days under the command of the team, Leonardo made them perform at the highest level, winning 21 points out of the 24 in dispute, or if you like to see it another way: he won seven games and only lost one.
His presence had repercussions in the leader Milan, team that has seen how the 13 point advantage that they had in 2010 has been reduced to five since the arrival of their former head coach and player to Inter. The pressure has been such that Milan was unable to win in their last two confrontations, tying against Lazio at home and versus Genoa on the road.

More CAVtrastophies for Cleveland
25 losses in a row is the result of a team that hasn’t found a solution yet to LeBron James’ departure to Miami.
Losing their franchise player in the summer to the Miami Heat is still having great repercussion in Cleveland, as the Cavaliers have done what no other team in the NBA had been able to do before: losing 25 games in a row. With this negative record the Cavs are only one loss away from trying the longest losing streak in major professional sports, which belongs to the 1976/77 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL) and the 1889 Louisville Colonels (MLB) with 26 consecutive defeats.
As ironic as it can be, the previous record of 24 straight losses in the NBA also belonged to the Cavs, but it was suffered in two different seasons, during the end of the 1982 season and beginning of the 1983 one.
The post LeBron James era is being nothing but a nightmare for the Cavaliers. During his seven-season stay in Cleveland the Cavs were able to make it to the playoffs in five straight seasons, something that won’t happen this year. Sunk in the bottom of the Central Division in the East with an 8-44 record, Cleveland is not only the worst team in the Conference, but also the worst in the league.
Although the Cavs try to pretend that not all of their problems spin around James’ departure, and they try to attribute part of their problems to the injuries of key players such Mo Williams and Anderson Varejao, reality shows something else. In December and with a healthy roster they were only able to win one game out of 15, at home against the New York Knicks.
What the Cavs are going through this season can not receive another word but catastrophe. After achieving the best record in the league in the previous regular season with 62-21, Cleveland has a high percentage of options to finish as the worst team in the NBA this year. This is a surprising counterpoint for such a short period of time.
The reason why this is happening can be found in the points per game average, which has dropped from 102.1 in 2009/10 to 93.4 this year, as well as in the points allowed, which has been increased from 95.6 last year to 105.2 this season.
The Cavs have shown a slight improvement in the last five games despite losing them, as they have decreased their average margin of defeat from 14.3 points to 5. But their effort has been insufficient to put things back on the right track.
After losing their three last games against teams -Memphis Grizzlies, Portland Trail Blazers and Dallas Mavericks- that have winning records, the Cavs will be facing three teams with losing records -Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers and Washington Wizards-, which gives them a good chance to finally put an end to their losing streak.

Rodgers carried a patchwork lineup into the Super Bowl, then kept things calm when Green Bay’s depth was tested further. His most accomplished receiver and the heart-and-soul of his defense were knocked out by halftime, yet Rodgers still guided the Packers to a 31-25 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night.
So now the Vince Lombardi Trophy is headed back to Titletown for the first time in 14 years, and Rodgers can lead the championship parade with the shiny hardware riding shotgun in the red convertible he received as Super Bowl MVP.
“It’s the top of the mountain in my sport, my profession,” Rodgers said. “It’s what you dream about as a kid and think about in high school, junior college, D-I—getting this opportunity and what would you do?”
Here’s what Rodgers did: He put his team ahead on their second drive and made sure they never trailed. He went back to receivers even after they dropped passes, sometimes on the very next snap. He threw three touchdowns and had no turnovers.
He also proved Green Bay general manager Ted Thompson was right to draft him and to trade Brett Favre(notes) so he could become the starter. Favre led the Packers to their last championship, but was never the Super Bowl MVP.
“I told Ted back in 2005 he wouldn’t be sorry with this pick,” Rodgers said. “I told him in ’08 that I was going to repay their trust and get us this opportunity.”
Thompson was right about a lot of guys.
No matter how many players the Packers lost this season—and they put 16 on injured reserve, including a half-dozen starters—someone else was always ready to step in. Holes were still being plugged in this game.
